We all learned in third grade biology that trees are an essential part of our lives. They improve air quality by producing oxygen, trees filter the water we drink, provide shelter for wildlife and many, many more positive things. Planting trees is one of the easiest and affordable ways to positively affect the environment. But why is it so great to plant trees in the fall?

Many experts claim that planting trees in the fall actually has several benefits involved. Cooler and wetter weather is the perfect time to plant trees, as trees planted in these months are better equipped to deal with heat and drought in the following season. The ideal time to plant trees is mid- August through mid- October when transpiration is low and root generation potential is high.

The ground in the fall season is usually in better condition for digging than it is in the springtime.Summer’s warmth lingers long enough to keep the soil moist, not sodden, and crumbly for a long period of time.

Planting trees in the fall gives an extra growing season before summer starts, and allows trees to grow roots in the fall months and again in early spring before the leaves start to develop. Stronger root systems and less maintenance are perks of planting trees in the fall.

But remember, all plants have growing requirements and no matter when you’re planting - your tree will still need a little care in the first year of its life.
